Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has received a special “Superior Player of the Match” award in recognition of his outstanding display during Nigeria’s memorable 3-2 victory over Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
Okocha unveiled the silver trophy in a video posted on his Instagram page on June 11, proudly showcasing the award presented to him for his exceptional performance in one of the most celebrated matches in Nigerian football history.
“Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” the former Super Eagles captain said.
He explained that the recognition was awarded for his Man of the Match-worthy display during the Nigeria-Spain clash at the 1998 World Cup and expressed gratitude to the organisations behind the initiative.
The award forms part of a collaboration between FIFA, Michelob ULTRA, and Copa90 aimed at honouring exceptional individual performances from World Cups played before the official Player of the Match award was introduced in 2002.
According to the organisers, extensive reviews of historical records and match footage were conducted to identify players whose remarkable contributions deserved formal recognition.
The honour comes nearly three decades after Nigeria stunned Spain in Nantes during their opening match of the 1998 World Cup.
Heading into the tournament, the Super Eagles were considered underdogs against a star-studded Spanish team that featured players such as Raúl González, Fernando Hierro, Luis Enrique, Fernando Morientes, Santiago Cañizares, and veteran goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta.
Nigeria entered the competition following a difficult run of friendly matches, suffering defeats to Germany, the former Yugoslavia, and the Netherlands.
Despite those setbacks, the Super Eagles produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets, with Okocha delivering a masterclass in midfield.
Spain opened the scoring through a free-kick from Hierro before Mutiu Adepoju equalised with a header from a corner delivered by Garba Lawal.
Raúl restored Spain’s lead early in the second half, but Nigeria responded when Zubizarreta inadvertently turned Lawal’s cross into his own net.
The comeback was completed in dramatic fashion when Sunday Oliseh unleashed a superb volley with 12 minutes remaining after a Spanish defender redirected Okocha’s long throw into his path.
Throughout the encounter, Okocha dazzled spectators with his creativity, vision, dribbling skills, and precise passing, playing a central role in one of Nigeria’s greatest World Cup victories.
The Super Eagles eventually progressed to the Round of 16 alongside Paraguay, while Spain and Bulgaria exited the competition at the group stage.
The special recognition serves as a lasting tribute to Okocha’s unforgettable contribution to Nigerian football and one of the most iconic performances in World Cup history.
