Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan Sets Sights on World Cup Success Ahead of Belgium Encounter

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has declared that merely qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not the ultimate goal for the Pharaohs, stressing that his side is determined to make a significant impact on the global stage.

The former Egypt international, who featured at the 1990 World Cup, believes the current squad possesses the talent and determination needed to achieve a historic breakthrough and elevate Egypt’s status in world football.

Speaking ahead of Egypt’s opening World Cup fixture against Belgium, Hassan reflected on his experiences as a player and outlined his ambitions for the national team.

“Participating in the World Cup as both a player and a coach is a remarkable achievement,” Hassan said. “Egypt deserves to be among football’s elite nations. In 1990, we showed promise and came close to advancing, but we were unable to take the next step. My hope is that this generation can finally achieve that goal.”

Despite being Africa’s most decorated national team with seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, Egypt has never progressed beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup.

Hassan believes the country’s deep passion for football can inspire the players to write a new chapter in the nation’s sporting history.

“In Egypt, football is much more than a game—it is a way of life,” he said. “Whenever Egyptians see their national flag, they unite behind it, especially in football. My responsibility is to meet the expectations of the Egyptian people and our supporters.”

The coach also reserved special praise for captain Mohamed Salah, describing the star forward as one of the finest footballers in the world.

“Mohamed Salah has achieved extraordinary success and broken numerous records throughout his career,” Hassan noted. “He is among the best players globally, and I hope he continues to score and achieve even more. Most importantly, we want Egypt to win matches and score goals.”

Egypt will begin their World Cup campaign against Belgium carrying the hopes of millions of fans eager to see the Pharaohs finally advance beyond the tournament’s opening stage.
