The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to focus on rehabilitating and maintaining existing roads instead of starting new road construction projects.
Obi argued that Nigeria’s limited resources should be directed toward restoring major highways that are currently in poor condition rather than investing in new projects that may not provide immediate relief to citizens.
The former Anambra State governor made the remarks in a statement titled “My Stance on Road Development”, shared on his official X account on Monday.
He identified the Asaba-Benin Road as one of the country’s most important highways requiring urgent attention, describing it as a major transport route connecting several parts of the South-East, South-South and North-Central regions to Lagos.
Obi said that instead of launching new construction and road dualisation projects, the government should first address the condition of existing infrastructure that Nigerians rely on daily.
He noted that the poor state of the Asaba-Benin Road has contributed to severe traffic congestion, increased travel difficulties and economic losses for commuters, businesses and transport operators.
According to him, the challenges facing the route reflect a wider problem affecting many major highways across the country.
Obi maintained that Nigerians need safe and functional roads rather than projects introduced mainly for public attention or political advantage.
He urged authorities to prioritise the reconstruction and proper maintenance of critical road networks, saying that improved infrastructure would enhance transportation, support business activities and contribute to economic growth.
The former presidential candidate also criticised what he described as infrastructure decisions driven by political interests, stressing that genuine development should focus on solving pressing problems.
He concluded by reiterating his belief that better planning and responsible management of resources can help transform Nigeria, adding his familiar message: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
