Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo surgery to treat a mild, benign heart rhythm disorder and is expected to remain sidelined until after the next international break.
The Serie A champions confirmed earlier today, September 1, that the Scotland international had developed an irregular heartbeat and will undergo a pulsed field ablation (PFA) procedure in the coming days.
“Following the development of a minor, benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay over the coming days will undergo an operation a PFA [pulsed field ablation],” Napoli said.
The 29-year-old is expected to return after the international break, meaning he will miss Scotland’s upcoming fixtures as well as Napoli’s matches during his recovery.
McTominay has featured in both of Napoli’s Serie A matches this season. He was substituted in the second half of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Como before the club announced his diagnosis.
PFA is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms. Doctors insert catheters through a small opening, usually in the groin or wrist, and guide them to the heart to target the area causing the irregular electrical signals.
McTominay enjoyed a standout campaign after joining Napoli from Manchester United, winning the Serie A MVP award as he helped the club claim the league title in 2025.
He also represented Scotland at this year’s World Cup and was among the contenders for the Ballon d’Or.
McTominay, a product of Manchester United’s youth system, joined the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure and spent seven seasons in the first team before moving to Napoli in 2024.
He has earned 73 caps for Scotland and scored 15 goals for his country.
His absence will also affect Scotland, with the midfielder unlikely to feature when their extended international break begins on September 21.
Scotland has four fixtures scheduled during the break as they begin their Group B1 campaign against Slovenia, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.
During the international break, Sebastien Pocognoli will take charge of Scotland for the first time after replacing Steve Clarke as head coach.
