CIS, ASHON Celebrate Nigeria’s Capital Market Gains, Back ₦750trn Market Capitalization Target

SNOW TV NEWS DESK
Nigeria’s capital market is strengthening its position as a key driver of economic growth, following a series of regulatory reforms, improvements in market infrastructure, and increased efforts to attract domestic and international investors.

Against this backdrop, the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) and the Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria (ASHON) have commended the industry’s achievements in 2026, urging stakeholders to sustain the momentum towards the ambitious ₦750 trillion market capitalization target.

In a joint congratulatory message signed by Dr. Fiona Ahimie, 14th President and Chairman of the Council of CIS, and Sehinde Adenagbe, Chairman of ASHON, the organizations highlighted several developments they said reflected the growing strength and competitiveness of Nigeria’s capital market.

Among the milestones identified were the Nigerian Exchange Limited’s (NGX) recognition as Africa’s Best Exchange, the inauguration of the Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan 2.0 (NCMMP 2.0), the launch of the National Savings Scheme, and Nigeria’s adoption of a T+1 settlement cycle.

According to the two professional bodies, these developments demonstrate the collective efforts of regulators, market operators, professional associations, and other stakeholders to improve the market’s efficiency, accessibility, and international standing.

They particularly commended the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its regulatory leadership and initiatives designed to mobilize domestic savings, broaden investor participation, and support the drive towards the ₦750 trillion market capitalization goal.

The organizations also praised the Federal Ministry of Finance for its collaboration with the SEC and other stakeholders in developing and launching the National Savings Scheme.

They noted that the initiative could encourage a stronger savings culture, expand retail investment, and increase the availability of domestic capital for productive economic activities.

However, CIS and ASHON stressed that effective implementation, institutional cooperation, and sustained public awareness would be necessary to maximize the scheme’s impact.

T+1 Settlement Cycle Boosts Market Efficiency

The organizations identified Nigeria’s transition to a T+1 settlement cycle on June 1, 2026, as another significant development in the capital market.

The arrangement reduced the settlement period for securities transactions to one business day, compared with the previous longer settlement cycle.

CIS and ASHON said the change had improved settlement efficiency, reduced counterparty exposure, enhanced capital utilization, and brought Nigeria’s market infrastructure closer to international standards.

They noted that continued improvements in settlement systems and trading infrastructure would be important in strengthening investor confidence and supporting higher transaction volumes.

Dangote Refinery IPO Offers New Investment Opportunities

The ongoing initial public offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals was also described as a defining moment for Nigeria’s capital market.

According to the organizations, the offering demonstrates the market’s potential to mobilize substantial capital for large-scale enterprises while providing opportunities for wider public participation in wealth creation.

They noted that the extension of the offer period to October 27, 2026, would give prospective investors additional time to consider participating in the transaction.

The bodies also emphasized the role of stockbrokers and digital investment platforms in expanding access to the offering, particularly among retail investors.

They said effective distribution channels and investor education would be crucial to ensuring that more Nigerians could participate in investment opportunities available through the capital market.

Nigeria’s Return to FTSE Russell Frontier Market Status

CIS and ASHON further welcomed Nigeria’s return to FTSE Russell Frontier Market status, describing it as a development that could strengthen the country’s visibility among international investors.

They noted that improvements in market accessibility, foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation, and regulatory transparency could help make Nigeria more attractive to foreign portfolio investors.

The organizations also pointed to banking sector recapitalization, the expansion of digital investment platforms, improvements in market infrastructure, and growing interest in sustainable finance as developments supporting the capital market’s capacity to finance businesses and economic growth.

They said these initiatives could contribute to enterprise development, employment generation, and broader economic activity if supported by effective policies and sustained investment.

Stockbrokers Urged to Maintain Professional Standards

The two organizations recognized the contributions of stockbrokers and securities dealing firms to market development through investment advisory services, professional intermediation, distribution networks, and direct engagement with investors.

CIS emphasized the importance of professional competence, ethical conduct, and continuous capacity development, while ASHON highlighted the resilience and operational contributions of securities dealing firms.

Despite the progress recorded, both bodies cautioned that sustaining the market’s growth would require stronger retail participation, improved investor protection, technological innovation, high professional standards, and a more supportive business environment.

They called for continued collaboration among regulators, market operators, government institutions, listed companies, prospective issuers, and investors to consolidate existing reforms and translate market expansion into broader economic benefits.

The organizations congratulated stakeholders across the Nigerian capital market, expressing optimism that the achievements recorded in 2026 would provide a stronger foundation for capital formation, investor confidence, and long-term economic prosperity.

SNOW TV NEWS EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Nigeria’s ₦750trn Market Ambition Must Be Backed by Investor Confidence and Economic Value#

The Nigerian capital market’s recent reforms and infrastructure improvements present opportunities to deepen investment, mobilize domestic savings, and provide businesses with access to long-term financing. However, the ambition to reach ₦750 trillion in market capitalization must be supported by sustainable growth, sound regulation, and meaningful participation by investors.

Market capitalization is an important indicator of the value of listed companies, but an increase in the headline figure alone does not necessarily translate into improved living standards, stronger business productivity, or broader economic prosperity.

For the target to deliver lasting benefits, Nigeria must encourage more companies to list, strengthen corporate governance, improve transparency, and make investment products accessible to a wider cross-section of the population. Retail investors, in particular, need reliable information, fair market practices, and effective protection against fraud and misconduct.

Nigeria’s return to FTSE Russell Frontier Market status and the adoption of the T+1 settlement cycle may also support international confidence. Nevertheless, attracting long-term foreign investment will require consistent policies, improved foreign exchange accessibility, and regulatory predictability and confidence that investors can enter and exit the market under clear rules.

Our editorial position is that Nigeria should pursue the ₦750 trillion market capitalization target as part of a broader strategy for sustainable economic development, rather than as an end in itself. The ultimate measure of success should be a more transparent and inclusive market that helps businesses raise capital, creates investment opportunities for Nigerians, and channels funds into productive activities that generate jobs and economic value.
