Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of late Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel while publicly defending his teammate and goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, following the fatal on-field collision that claimed the striker’s life.
De Miguel, who played for Spanish second-division club Tenerife, suffered severe head and chest injuries after colliding with Owono during Monday’s league encounter.
The incident happened when Owono rushed out of his goal to clear the ball, resulting in a heavy collision with the Tenerife forward. The goalkeeper was subsequently shown a red card by the referee.
Tenerife confirmed the tragic news in a statement shared on its social media platforms on Tuesday morning, announcing that De Miguel had died from his injuries.
His death has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes pouring in from players, clubs, and supporters.
Spatz, who was among those involved in carrying the injured striker off the pitch on a stretcher, later took to Instagram on Tuesday night to address the tragedy.
While expressing his sympathy to De Miguel’s loved ones, the defender also spoke about the emotional impact the incident had on Owono, describing him as a deeply affected teammate and friend.
He stressed that the goalkeeper never intended to cause harm and urged people to remember the human being behind the football incident.
“There are moments when football stops making sense. First of all, I would like to express my most sincere condolences and send all my love to the family, friends, and loved ones of Jesus.
“I would also like to say a few words about my teammate, goalkeeper, and friend, who has been deeply affected by what happened. Those of us who know him know what kind of person he is, how much he is suffering at this moment, and that he would never intentionally hurt anyone,” Spatz wrote.
His intervention highlights the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on both teams, particularly Owono, who was directly involved in the collision.
Although football is a highly competitive sport where physical challenges are part of the game, the death of De Miguel has served as a painful reminder of how quickly events on the pitch can turn into life-changing tragedies.
As the football community mourns the Tenerife striker, attention is also turning towards the emotional well-being of those who witnessed and were involved in the heartbreaking incident.
