Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, has urged the people of the South-East to reconsider their political approach ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that the region must embrace dialogue and strategic engagement with the Federal Government to achieve its interests.
Uzodimma made the call on Friday while addressing South-East stakeholders during a high-level meeting at the Imo State Government House in Owerri.
The governor stressed that continued opposition politics and complaints about political marginalization would not necessarily deliver the results the region desires. Instead, he encouraged South-East leaders to build stronger relationships with President Bola Tinubu’s administration and pursue their demands through constructive negotiations.
According to him, the region must be willing to make difficult political decisions and put aside internal rivalries if it hopes to secure greater federal attention and development.
“We need results; we must change our style; we must agree on how to sit down with the man in power and negotiate our interest. We must forget about local competitions. We as Igbo people must take bold decisions,” Uzodimma said.
He also cautioned that Southeast governors could not independently secure the region’s political objectives without the cooperation of traditional rulers, political leaders, business figures, and other influential stakeholders.
The governor maintained that political power ultimately belongs to the people, describing governors as representatives who need broader public support to advance regional interests.
Uzodimma further pointed to the political engagements between President Tinubu and leaders from other parts of the country, including the South-South, Middle Belt, and North-East, as examples of how regions could communicate their demands directly to the Federal Government.
He questioned why the Southeast continued to express concerns about marginalization without adopting a similar approach to negotiating its priorities with the presidency.
As part of his proposal, the governor called on stakeholders to prepare a comprehensive document outlining the region’s most pressing needs, supported by verifiable facts and figures.
He said the document would serve as a negotiating framework when South-East representatives eventually meet with President Tinubu to discuss issues affecting the region.
Uzodimma’s remarks come as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with questions surrounding the South-East’s political representation, federal appointments, infrastructure, and broader national influence expected to feature prominently in regional discussions.
His message is essentially a call for a more coordinated political strategy, with the governor arguing that stronger engagement with the government at the center could help the Southeast translate its demands into concrete results.
