Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu: FG Lists 30 Witnesses To Testify In Trial Of Suspects

The Federal Government has lined up 30 witnesses to appear in court during the trial of six individuals accused of allegedly plotting to remove President Bola Tinubu’s administration through unconstitutional means.

The case, which is before the Federal High Court in Abuja, involves a retired major general, a former naval officer, a police inspector, and three other defendants facing charges connected to an alleged coup attempt.

The defendants are identified as retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor, Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.

Court documents filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation revealed that the prosecution plans to rely on testimonies from security investigators, military personnel, forensic experts, financial institution officials, hotel representatives, and other civilian witnesses.

The accused persons are facing a 13-count charge bordering on allegations of treason, terrorism financing, money laundering, and failure to disclose information about the alleged plot.

According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly worked alongside Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji and others currently at large in an alleged plan to remove President Tinubu from office.

The government further claimed that some of the suspects were aware of the alleged plan but failed to report it, while others were accused of involvement in financial activities linked to the operation.

Prosecutors are expected to present various forms of evidence, including financial records, electronic materials recovered from mobile devices, forensic reports, and witness accounts.

Among the witnesses are investigators who handled the case and recovered materials connected to the allegations, as well as forensic specialists who examined electronic devices seized during the investigation.

Officials from several banks and financial service providers are also expected to testify and provide transaction records. The institutions listed include Access Bank, Union Bank, Fidelity Bank, Zenith Bank, Providus Bank, United Bank for Africa, First City Monument Bank, First Bank, Ecobank, Jaiz Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, SunTrust Bank, and Opay Digital Services Limited.

The prosecution also intends to call civilian witnesses who will testify on issues relating to alleged financial transactions, vehicle purchases, and vehicle refurbishment activities linked to the investigation.

Some of the witnesses include Aminu Abdullahi, expected to provide evidence on alleged instructions from Colonel Ma’aji and movement of funds; Abdulganiyu Ahmed, who will testify about vehicles allegedly acquired in connection with the matter; and Moses Opata, who is expected to discuss contracts involving vehicle repairs and refurbishment.

A golf equipment dealer, Peter Gambo, is also listed as a witness and is expected to testify regarding the sale of golf equipment to Squadron Leader Noel Zuzu.

Representatives from hospitality businesses in Abuja and Kaduna are also scheduled to appear before the court to provide information on hotel reservations and meetings allegedly connected to the defendants.

Military witnesses have equally been included on the list, with their testimonies expected to focus on military equipment, vehicles, arms, and ammunition reportedly linked to the investigation.

The military personnel listed include Captain Haruna of the 81 Division Provost Company, Corporal Bejide Kehinde, Colonel Y.B. Mohammed, Brigadier General E. Agada, and Captain K.I. Eromosele.

The prosecution informed the court that it may introduce additional evidence and call more witnesses as proceedings continue.

The Federal Government maintained that further materials could be presented during the course of the trial.
