United States President Donald Trump has dismissed allegations that he shared an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus Christ, following widespread backlash over a controversial visual that circulated online.
Reports had suggested the image was posted on his Truth Social platform before being taken down. The picture drew criticism from many who believed it portrayed Trump using Christian religious symbolism.
Addressing journalists at the White House on Monday, Trump denied the claims, stating that the image had been misinterpreted. He explained that he believed the visual showed him as a doctor linked to humanitarian work, particularly in support of the Red Cross.
According to him, the intention behind the image was to represent healing and helping people, not to depict any religious figure. Trump added that the backlash was driven by what he described as “fake news” and misunderstanding.
The image in question showed Trump dressed in flowing robes, surrounded by bright light, with his hands extended in a pose some viewers associated with traditional depictions of Jesus Christ. It also featured figures resembling angels or armed personnel, along with elements like fighter jets and fireworks—blending religious imagery with themes of American nationalism.
Critics condemned the image as inappropriate and offensive, arguing that it crossed religious boundaries and elevated Trump’s political image to a symbolic or messianic level.
The controversy comes amid ongoing tensions between Trump and Pope Leo XIV. Trump recently criticised the pope over his views on global issues, describing him as weak on crime and ineffective in foreign policy, while also accusing him of unfairly targeting his administration.
Despite the criticism, Trump maintained that the reaction to the image was based on a misunderstanding, insisting it was meant to symbolise care and humanitarian service rather than any religious portrayal.
