February 2 sit-at-home was a one-off action – IPOB spokesman

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has clarified that the sit-at-home observed on February 2 in parts of Onitsha was a one-off action and not a return to the weekly Monday lockdowns previously seen in the South-East.IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said the action was a reaction to what the group described as the increasingly authoritarian posture of Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, particularly following tensions with traders in Onitsha. He stressed that IPOB has not reinstated any policy of weekly sit-at-home.Powerful recalled that the Monday sit-at-home began in August 2021 to demand the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was then in the custody of the Department of State Services. He said the action was later cancelled on Kanu’s directive after wides...

In show of support, Canada and France open consulates in Greenland

Canada and France will open consulates in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, on Friday, February 6, in a strong show of support for the Danish autonomous territory, as both countries oppose US President Donald Trump’s stated desire to control the island.Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly argued that Washington needs to control the strategic, mineral-rich Arctic island for security reasons. Last month, however, he appeared to soften his stance, saying he had reached a “framework” agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to secure greater American influence without taking control.A joint US–Denmark–Greenland working group has since been set up to address Washington’s security concerns in the Arctic, although details of the discussions have not been...

Leicester City have been hit with a six-point deduction by the English Football League (EFL) for breaching profit and sustainability regulations, dealing another blow to their difficult Championship campaign. The penalty takes immediate effect, pushing the Foxes down from 17th to 20th place on the table. However, following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League last season, jurisdiction over the case shifted to the EFL, which assessed the matter under its own financial rules.Leicester City have vo...
