The Edo State Government has announced the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area due to growing security concerns in the area.
The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.
According to the government, the shutdown will remain in effect until further notice as authorities work to address the security situation and ensure the safety of students and staff.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the government said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers, and other school personnel.
The statement confirmed that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended indefinitely.
However, students currently participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed access to their examination centres under enhanced security arrangements.
The government said the security measures would be coordinated by school management, security agencies, and community leaders to ensure the safety of candidates throughout the examination period.
Principals of the affected schools have been directed to oversee the safe return of students to their parents and guardians, while also ensuring that school facilities, equipment, and other property are adequately secured during the closure.
They were further instructed to maintain constant communication with the state government, education authorities, and security agencies for updates and guidance.
The Edo State Government urged parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing security efforts.
Authorities also assured the public that steps are being taken to address the challenges and restore normal academic activities as soon as the security situation improves.
