Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has reportedly moved to recover his international passport from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct during his administration.
Okowa recently visited the EFCC’s Lagos office, a development that initially sparked speculation. However, sources familiar with the matter disclosed that the visit was linked to efforts to secure the release of his travel document for medical treatment abroad.
The former governor was arrested on November 4, 2024, and interrogated by operatives of the commission at its Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate as part of investigations into alleged financial irregularities.
According to a source, Okowa’s appearance at the Lagos office formed part of ongoing engagements with the anti-graft agency regarding his case and his request for the temporary release of his passport.
The source clarified that the former governor was not arrested during the visit, stressing that discussions centered on the investigation and his desire to travel overseas for health-related reasons.
It remains unclear whether the EFCC has approved his request or released the document.
The commission has retained Okowa’s passport since his arrest over allegations involving the diversion of about ₦1.3 trillion in 13 percent derivation funds allocated to Delta State between 2015 and 2023.
The EFCC is also investigating claims that the former governor failed to account for the funds, as well as an additional ₦40 billion allegedly used to acquire shares in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas and a major commercial bank.
Following his arrest in Port Harcourt, Okowa was granted bail after meeting the conditions set by the commission.
The allegations remain under investigation, while the former governor has continued to deny any wrongdoing.
