UPDATE : Hospital Responds to Chimamanda Adichie’s Son’s Death, Launches Internal Probe

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has finally reacted to the death of the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, announcing that it has begun an internal investigation into the incident.

The hospital’s statement comes after Adichie publicly alleged that medical negligence at the Lagos-based facility caused the death of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Adichie had earlier accused the hospital of failing to adequately monitor her child after he was sedated with propofol for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line. She claimed the alleged lapse resulted in serious complications, including unresponsiveness, seizures, and eventual cardiac arrest.

In a statement issued by its management, Euracare expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, describing the loss as heartbreaking.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Chimamanda Adichie and her family on the passing of their son and recognize the profound and unimaginable pain they are going through at this extremely difficult time,” the hospital said.

Euracare explained that it decided to address the issue due to widespread public discussions, adding that some reports circulating were inaccurate.

“For the sake of clarity and public record, we find it necessary to state that certain reports currently in circulation contain inaccuracies,” the statement noted.

According to the hospital, the child was already critically ill before arriving at its facility and had received treatment at two pediatric centres prior to being referred to Euracare.

“The patient was critically unwell and was referred to our hospital for specific diagnostic procedures after undergoing treatment at two pediatric facilities,” it said.

The hospital maintained that upon admission, its medical team provided care in accordance with established clinical guidelines and internationally recognized medical standards, including sedation where medically necessary.

Euracare confirmed that a comprehensive internal review of the case has been initiated, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and due process.

“We have commenced a thorough internal investigation in line with our clinical governance framework and best practices. We are committed to engaging openly and responsibly with all relevant clinical and regulatory processes,” the hospital stated.

It further disclosed that it collaborated with external medical professionals recommended by the family and rendered all necessary clinical support, but sadly, the child passed away less than 24 hours after admission.

The hospital added that the incident has deeply impacted its staff and reaffirmed its dedication to compassion, patient safety, and respect for the family’s privacy.

“As healthcare professionals, we feel the weight of this loss profoundly. Our focus remains compassion, patient safety, and the responsible management of this matter, while respecting the family’s privacy and allowing due process to take its course,” the statement concluded.

Euracare said it would continue to keep the family in its thoughts and prayers as investigations proceed.
