The National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Tukur Mohammed-Baba, has expressed doubt that Peter Obi will replicate his strong showing in the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Mohammed-Baba said the political landscape has changed significantly since 2023, pointing to Obi’s movement across different political platforms as one of the factors that could affect his support base.
According to him, Nigerian politics has increasingly become focused on personal ambitions rather than public service.
“What is becoming clear is that many politicians are engaged in the politics of individuals—who gets what position and who represents which platform,” he said.
Mohammed-Baba argued that political ambition should be driven by service to the people, adding that personal aspirations lose value when they fail to produce tangible benefits for citizens.
He noted that many Nigerians have become disillusioned with political leaders and now feel abandoned.
“Most ordinary Nigerians I speak with believe they are on their own. Many say only God can help them. While prayer is important, there must also be meaningful action,” he stated.
The ACF spokesman further claimed that many political parties have evolved into platforms built around individuals rather than ideologies or public interests.
‘Obi’s Support Base Has Diminished’
While acknowledging Obi’s impressive performance in the 2023 election, Mohammed-Baba maintained that events since then have weakened the former Labour Party candidate’s appeal.
“Peter Obi made remarkable inroads in 2023 and performed very well. However, developments over the past year have eroded some of that support, and I would be surprised if he achieves the same level of success again,” he said.
He also questioned Obi’s political direction, citing his association with multiple parties in recent years.
“He has moved across two or three political platforms, and naturally people are asking what exactly he wants,” Mohammed-Baba added.
Questions Over Kwankwaso’s 2027 Prospects
Mohammed-Baba also commented on the prospects of NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, who secured victory in Kano State during the 2023 presidential election under the banner of the New Nigerian Peoples Party.
According to him, it remains uncertain whether Kwankwaso can repeat that performance in the 2027 election.
“Kwankwaso delivered Kano in 2023, but there is considerable doubt about whether he can achieve the same result in 2027, particularly given some of the statements he has made recently,” he said.
