The Council of Legal Education has released a list of 114 universities authorised to run law programmes in Nigeria.

SNOW TV NEWS reports that in a circular issued on Friday, March 13, the council stated that only the listed institutions are permitted to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in the country.

The circular was signed by the council’s Secretary and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho.

The council warned universities operating law programmes without its approval to immediately desist, stressing that such institutions risk sanctions.

According to the council, universities that admit students into unapproved law programmes are violating regulations governing legal education in the country.

“The public is further informed that any university that admits students into a law programme without the approval of the Council of Legal Education is acting contrary to the provisions regulating legal education in Nigeria and will be subject to appropriate sanctions,” the circular stated.

The council also cautioned prospective students and parents to verify the approval status of institutions before applying for law programmes.

It explained that students admitted into unapproved programmes would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

This means such graduates would be unable to proceed with the mandatory professional training required to practise law in Nigeria.

The council further disclosed that the list of approved universities would be reviewed and updated periodically in line with its statutory mandate to regulate legal education across the country.

According to the circular, the council will continue to monitor institutions offering law programmes to ensure compliance with established standards.

The council also urged the public to rely only on its official list when seeking admission into law faculties across Nigerian universities.
