Austria has refused to grant American fighter jets permission to pass through its airspace for military operations targeting Iran, citing its long-standing policy of neutrality.
The country’s defence ministry confirmed that the United States will not be allowed to use Austrian airspace for missions connected to the ongoing conflict.
Under its neutrality laws, Austria is barred from joining military alliances such as NATO or supporting foreign military campaigns, including granting access for offensive operations.
Officials disclosed that multiple requests have been made by the US, but each will be assessed individually in collaboration with the foreign ministry. The stance reflects increasing caution among some European nations regarding deeper involvement in the conflict.
Domestically, political voices have also pushed back. Sven Hergovich, leader of the Social Democratic Party, called on the government to reject any US military or logistical flights, warning that the war could destabilize Europe and impact economic interests.
Austria’s decision mirrors similar actions by other countries. Spain has also denied US warplanes access to its airspace, while France, Italy, and Switzerland have adopted cautious or restrictive approaches.
In contrast, the United Kingdom has permitted US aircraft to operate from certain bases, including RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, although officials emphasize these are limited to defensive roles.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has criticized allies for their reluctance to fully support operations against Iran, accusing some nations of not contributing enough. The differing responses underline divisions among Western allies as geopolitical tensions continue to rise.
