Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have unanimously endorsed their Speaker, Adebowale Ogundoyin, as their preferred candidate to succeed Seyi Makinde in the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced during Wednesday’s plenary session, signaling early political positioning ahead of the next election cycle in the state.
The motion was moved by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Fadeyi, who represents Ona Ara State Constituency. He noted that lawmakers had agreed to mobilise support across the state for Ogundoyin’s governorship ambition.
Fadeyi described the Speaker, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Ibarapa East State Constituency, as a unifying and stabilising figure within the legislature, adding that he possesses the leadership qualities needed to sustain governance beyond the current administration.
He further stated that Ogundoyin has the experience and competence required to take over leadership in 2027.
Also speaking, Majority Leader Sanjo Adedoyin praised the Speaker’s performance, describing him as a leader who has exceeded expectations and demonstrated strong capacity for higher responsibility.
Other lawmakers echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Ogundoyin’s leadership has brought stability and progress to the Assembly, making him a strong contender for the governorship seat.
The legislators also pledged their full support, vowing to work towards ensuring his emergence as governor in 2027.
The endorsement represents one of the earliest public political alignments ahead of the Oyo State governorship race, positioning Ogundoyin as a major figure in the succession plan as Governor Makinde’s tenure draws to a close.
