Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has presented Mustafa Gubio as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The move comes amid ongoing consultations within the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
Sources indicate that Zulum opted not to support candidates reportedly favoured by the Vice President, including Kaka Shehu Lawan and Abubakar Kyari, pointing to a growing contest over the APC ticket in Borno.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Dauda Iliya, the governor said Gubio’s emergence followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders and reflects a unified stance within the state chapter of the party.
Zulum also commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and continued support for Borno State and the APC, noting that the President played a key role in the consensus arrangement.
He further praised Vice President Shettima for promoting unity within the party and supporting the process that led to Gubio’s emergence.
The governor had earlier unveiled Gubio as his preferred successor after purchasing the APC nomination and expression of interest forms on his behalf ahead of the 2027 election.
The presentation was attended by several political stakeholders, including former Governor Maina Ma’aji Lawan, Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur, and Senator Ali Ndume, among others.
